How does Santa know who has been good? Scout elves fly to the North Pole every night in the weeks before Christmas to report to Santa Claus. The next morning they return to the family and hide in a different place in the house. Can the Elf on the Shelf stay at home with the family all year round? After the holidays, the scout elves must return to the North Pole to prepare for Christmas for the following year.

Once back at the North Pole, they share their stories with the other elves, do flight training and help Santa Claus and his wife. On a special occasion, Santa Claus gives permission for the elves to return to the family home during the year. According to tradition, a scout elf loses its magic when touched by human hands. If they are safely in the gift box, they can be moved as usual. Once the elf has been adopted and given a name, it should not be touched.
